Ride for Brain Cancer Cure

By Matthew Kasselis

Sydney to Hobart on bike

Fundraiser by Matt Kasselis/Singleton, Jack Singleton, Will Turner

A loved one of ours was recently diagnosed with brain cancer. The felt helplessness of the situation was a cruel addition to the stark and frightening reminder of our real vulnerability. The journey following the diagnosis was necessary, but relentless, and most of all, fortunately available:

Treatments that required the sacrifice of physical strength and energy to cure that same body

Periodic check-ups which jolt you back in to the bleak reality of the situation with an unsettling anxiety

Managing an ever-present uncertainty, which if allowed to, could paralyse anyone from moving forward.

And the world keeps turning, responsibilities, commitments, goals and hopes still persist.

However, watching our loved one fight the cancer while continuing to participate in life and all the things that make it rich and meaningful has been an inspiration. She is a testament to the strength of the human spirit in carrying on in the face of struggle. Choosing participation over stagnation, hope over despair.

So when we (Jack, Matt and Will) were thinking up our next adventure, we wanted to make it something "cool" or "big" enough to justify fundraising money to contribute towards brain cancer research, and ultimately/hopefully, its cure.

We're going to be cycling unsupported from Sydney to Hobart and then rock climbing up the 400 metre face of Frenchmans Cap, via the Sydney Route, one of Tasmania's mountains in the remote west.

Overall, we will be cycling roughly 1500-1600 kilometres in about 12 back-to-back days, looking to average 130-150 kilometres per day. Our route will take us through the NSW Snowy Mountains and Victorian high country, down to Geelong, across to Devonport on the ferry and straight down the middle of Tasmania to Hobart. The climb itself is a three day endeavour, with a six hour walk in, full day effort on the mountain, and six hour walk out.
We are raising money for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. Cure Brain Cancer’s mission and ours is clear: unite our community to increase brain cancer survival and quality of life.

Any amount you can give will go a long way towards funding innovative and ground breaking research. Together, we can help make finding a cure for brain cancer a reality.

Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!
