I've created this page because I want to make a difference.
In March 2024, Luke Cannell—son, brother, friend, teammate, and colleague—tragically passed away after a courageous four-year battle with brain cancer. Luke’s strength, resilience, and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him, and his memory continues to inspire us. In his honour, we are committed to raising funds to support vital research aimed at combating this devastating disease. Through this initiative, we hope to contribute to the fight against brain cancer and ensure future families don’t endure the same heartbreak.
To honour Luke—affectionately known as ‘Baby’—we thought it fitting to celebrate his life through basketball, a sport he excelled at and loved. In 2013, Luke was a member of the First V at Trinity College, and in the years following, won social competitions alongside his brothers, Jake and Sam. So, we’re hosting a 3v3 Basketball tournament—Ballin’ For Baby—on the March long weekend. The tournament will take place at Trinity College, where Luke served as Deputy Head Prefect for the Class of 2013. Competitors will play for the Luke Cannell Memorial Trophy. Registration is open to everyone, and if competitive basketball isn’t your thing, there will also be a three-point contest.
This year we will take the post-event function to Bill Grayden Reserve, home of the Trinity Aquinas Amateur Football Club, where Luke plied his trade as a workmanlike utility for years. Here, there'll be presentations, raffles, silent auctions, and a chance to catch up with friends and remember one of the greats. All proceeds from both the tournament and function will be donated to the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.
